Howling Bells - Radio Wars

Hailing from Australia, this four piece indie band has spent the last two years perfecting their newest album `Radio Wars` and it shows. The album is a little shoegaze, a little psychedelia and a lot of pop (think The last Shadow Puppets mixed with The Cardigans). Juanita Stein’s wonderful voice helps lift the already well put together music and the result are very, very enjoyable.

`Nightingale`, which almost has a Berlin feel to it, really showcases Juanita`s voice as she sings "come sing with me, a melody, in the dark of the night". `Let`s be kids again` is a mellow tune in which Juanita dreamily sings about how "life was so simple then" before closing the song with coos and a wall of guitars sonically taking the listener into their past. `Golden Web` has a drum machine backing up Juanita`s vocal before the fuzzy guitars and keyboards sweep in. The album closer, `How Long` , has Juanita asking "how long, before I`ll let you go" with not much more than pulsating kick drum and horns as backing. By the time you are done with `Radio Wars` you will find it (along with Juanita`s voice) to be moody, sweet and enthralling.

The Howling Bells are very talented and they seem to be growing as a band (having made an album that is a bit cheerier than their last, thankfully). I am looking forward to seeing what they do next.

Between this and the new long player from The Duke Spirit...we are in for a good year, musically speaking of course.

Alela Diane - To Be Still

If you are a fan of the female folk/country movement that has had a resurgence as of late (think Joanna Newsom or Marisa Nadler), then this should be on the top of your list. Alela follows up her 2006 album `The Pirate`s Gospel ` with the equally compelling `To Be Still`. This bluegrass (with a hint of Irish flavor) tinged folk sound fits Alela`s voice like a glove and allows her to take the listener on a mellow yet soulful journey through her thoughts.

`Age Old Blues` uses Michael Hurley`s backing vocal to help Alela create melodies that have a very intimate feel, while tracks like `To Be Still` and `Take Us Back` let her voice do all the work. `My Brambles`, vocally, sounds like something Sinead O`connor could have made as Alela uses that familiar Celtic inflection with her voice to asks "Please come gather me, my darling." My favorite tracks,` Every Path` (which uses wonderful harmonies to explain that `Every path has lead me back to you.") and `Lady Divine`, both use a hypnotic mandolin to help compliment Alela`s beautiful voice.

I loved `The Pirate`s Gospel` but it (mainly just using her voice and guitar) was a more "campfire" sounding affair. The addition of the steel guitar, violin, banjo, mandolin and drums help give the album a richer sound and add a fullness that her first release lacked. Some of her fans may not like the addition of all the other instruments but, if they can get past that, they are in for a very sweet and uplifting emotional ride.

Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream

Empire Of The Sun is a collaborative project between Pnau`s Nick Littlemore and Luke Steele of The Sleepy Jackson. The album is retro (think 80`s synth bands) without being irritating and electro enough (think Ladyhawke or Walter Meego) to sound new and fresh (there may even be a little Prince and Vangelis thrown in for good measure). The album is full of catchy numbers and really shows the pop sensibility of the duo.

The first half of the album has a slower mellow feel, like the title track `Walking on a dream` or acoustic guitar driven (and really catchy) `We are the people`. It then moves towards the almost instrumental, `Delta Bay`, the completely instrumental `Country` (my personal favorite) and symphonic feeling `The World`. Then the album takes a turn, going into the more garage, indie sounding, last few tracks like `Swordfish Hotkiss Night ` and `Tiger by my side`. The duo close the album with the ballad `without you` (which has hints of `The Cars` classic `Who`s gonna take you home`) that could easily have closed any 80`s teen movie.

I am not sure if this album was planned as just a one off event but if they continue to make music, I will be listening (I am also waiting for the remix album as almost every song is ripe for a dance floor redo). This is the best electro-pop soundtrack to nonexistent fantasy film I`ve had to pleasure of hearing.
