Booka Shade - The Sun & The Neon Light

The Sun and The Neon Light' is the German house duos third studio album. Booka Shade are known for a more 'minimal' sound but with this album they change things up a bit .

This time out they have added more depth to their sound. There are more acoustic elements, bass (lot and lots of bass!), guitars and live percussion. They use soft, often effect laden vocals (with mixed results) as well as seemingly more instrumental samples than you can count , which help fill the more danceable tracks along with wonderful bleeps, blips and clunks. Then in the more heady tracks the lush strings and sweeping build of the "whooooooosh" wash over you like ocean waves. There are tracks like 'Charlotte' that are the more upbeat and energetic of the bunch. Other tracks like 'The Sun and the Neon Light' are aimed at taking you on a journey through your emotions. 'Redemption' and 'Karma Car' are two other moody, rich and expressive tracks that would be great for any "third-eye opening" experience.

If you lay back and close your eyes while listening to this album it takes you back to the glory days of chill out dance music form The Orb, Orbital, The Future Sounds of London and Underworld (and just like underworld, they used to be a synth pop band in the late 80's). 'The Sun and The Neon Light' may not live up to their seminal album 'Movements', but it will still make a lot of folks very happy. This album is really geared more towards the headphone set rather than the club set, but with a few of the more "dance" oriented tracks and the remixes that will accompany the album, there should be something here for everyone.

ZIZEK show on Saturday in NYC @ SOBs

As mentioned before...Zizek is a new club from Buenos Aires, Argentina dedicated to the emerging sounds of Hip Hop, Dancehall, Reggaetón, Cumbia, Bastard Pop, Mashups, and more.

From the beginning, Zizek has been a club where genres clash and cross over, making you dance, while still providing fresh and innovative sounds rarely heard before.

The goal however is to give these styles, ideas and rhythms an Argentine touch, with the aim of putting Buenos Aires on the map of the global music scene.

The star of Zizek has been Cumbia, a Latin American sound born from the fusion of old and new worlds in Colombia. Zizek is adapting cumbia's distinctive rhythm to make it relevant to a new generation of Latin Americans and it´s artists have created a few genres of their own, like cumbia beat, cumbiastep, and cumbia hop. Zizek´s producers are bringing out contrasting takes on a genre that already has a massive following and it is exploding faster than it ever would have up until now.

Following up their much hyped SXSW appearance, the revolving Zizek crew will be in the USA, Canada and Mexico again this July for a coast to coast summer blowout tour. DJ Villa Diamante and Bersa Discos Oro11 together with ZZK Records newest artists Fauna and Chancha Vía Circuíto will be bringing the new sound of Argentina to North America this time around.

The tour hits New York this Saturday!! Check it out!

Cazals - What of Our Future

Imagine if the Stokes were fronted by a drunk Billy Joel and they added some keyboards and a drum machine for good measure. If you can picture that, then you know what to expect from the Cazal's (named after chunky hip-hop glasses) new record 'What About Our Future'. In the past I have been a big fan of almost anything that has come out on the French label Kitsune. I am not saying that I don't like the label anymore but with the release of 'What About Our Future', they have stopped pushing boundaries and gone with something that sounds like everything else out at the moment. I liked the album, I really did, but there is nothing...I repeat, nothing new here.

The album opens with 'New Boy In Town', a catchy little number that spiked my interest. Next up is a Spandau Ballet cover, 'To Cut A Long Story Short', which isn't too bad (it actually is growing on me). Songs like 'Big Mistake', 'We're Just The Same' and 'Both Sides' do stand out because they sound like the band is trying to do something a little original. The album really goes south fast and ends up sounding just like Franz Ferdanad or The Strokes or any number of bands out in the last few years.

I really would like to say nicer thing about the band, but these days it takes a bit more than some sythns and a drum machine to get me on board. The album is good fun and may sound fresh to a younger crowd but for those of use who have been around a little while, this is just yet another band who promised (as they have said) "forward thinking guitar music" and end up just delivering catchy pop songs that rehash someone else's sound.
